French Stick

Impress your friends and show that you a master baker!

What you will need:

200g plain flour
300g strong white flour
7g fast-action yeast
250ml slightly warm water
salt

What you need to do:

1. Mix both flours in the same bowl then split into two.

2. In one bowl, create a well in the centre and place half the yeast into it.

3. Create a smooth mix by working in the warm water. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave at room temperature until bubbles appear all over the batter. Be patient - this can take up to four hours!

4. Add a tablespoon of water to your batter and mix in the flour and yeast left over to create a soft dough.

5. Knead the dough for 10 to 15 minutes to make it stretchy. Place cling film over the bowl and leave until it has doubled in size. This should take about an hour.

6. Cut your dough in half and roll into a ball. Cover both with cling film and leave for 15 minutes.

7. Roll each ball out to be baguette shaped and about 35cm in length.

8. Slash the top of each baguette in regular intervals to give them it's distinctive markings.

9. Cover in cling film and leave to rest for 45 minutes. Pre-heat your oven to Gas Mark 8/230c (Fan Oven 210c).

10. Dissolve some salt in cold water and brush over your dough.

11. Put your french sticks in the oven until brown - this should take about 20 minutes.

12. Impress your friends and family with your new creation!
