The Wicked Wit of Queen Elizabeth II
Recommended by Burnham Afternoon Guild book club.
This is a light hearted, but comprehensive book at some of the Queen's spontaneous responses that she makes as she goes about her daily life.
These are often previously told stories, but nevertheless they humanise the Queen - an icon for both this century and the past one - in a way that is endearing.
The book is structured to reflect the Queen's royal duties, family and interests. Here are the anecdotes, the one-liners and the gaffes (who other than Prince Philip!); also statistics, facts, royal events and family memories.
The book is compiled with a great deal of affection. The Queen was once overheard to say, when asked why she wore bright colours, 'If I wore beige nobody would know who I was' and 'I have to be seen to be believed'. Indeed, one guest at a garden party asked her, 'What do you do?' The Queen was reportedly nonplussed.
When making a speech at Prince Charles and Camilla's wedding, horse racing being one of her passions, the Queen used an amusing, prolonged metaphor involving the Grand National - but not before announcing that day's winner.
This is a book for dipping into, with its myriad stories. It makes an ideal gift for a friend interested in the royal family.
