Showing our TG colours

Well, what a Jubilee! I am sure we all had a great time over the long celebratory weekend. But here in Saltdean, our TG had another special occasion. Our Lido is a landmark, now, at last, being refurbished. The Lido committee has been doing a great job of raising and finding funds and hosted an exhibition on Friday 3rd June showing how the Lido building will look when it is completed, hopefully, next year. The lido was built in 1937-38 to designs by the architect Richard Jones and was hailed as the most innovative design of its type in Britain. With its tea terrace, sun deck, and café perched on the flat roof and distinctive curved wings at either end, it became the only lido to be featured in the Design Museum in London. The photo shows how it was originally. This fundraising has been going on for several years, with the pool being reopened, then the pandemic slowed everything up, as with many things around the world. The deterioration of the old building, complete with changing rooms, a ballroom and our old meeting room, was rapid, and a cause of concern. Also on show in the exhibition marquee were local charities and groups and that is where we stepped in. Our Chair, Audrey and Cecily made a display stand, showing some of the activities and work we do. Audrey also made sashes in TG colours, Elaine made hatbands, Diane organised the literature and Susan did lots of lifting and driving…. a real committee effort. During the day, we had further help on the stand from our Guild members and as it was sunny and warm a few were considering going into the pool for a swim! What was even better, we had time to find out about other local groups and spread the word about TG, some ladies we talked to had never heard of it, so our publicity was very worthwhile. The Brighton Saltdean Guild is an afternoon group of women of various ages, and apart from visiting speakers, we have social events, and guild activities such as the Lunch Club, Games and Canasta afternoons, Natural Health and Wellbeing Group and we are always open to new activities. We are looking for a leader to organise a walking group and we intend to expand our activities as our membership increases. When the Lido Building is open for general use again, we hope to move our meetings back there, it’s nice to feel part of history, just like being members of the Townswomen’s Guild.
