September 2017
Woodley Townswomen's Guild continues
to be busy. At our August meeting we had a very interesting talk
about Medical Detection Dogs and our speaker Neil Downing brought
along his own dog, Roots. We heard about the work of these dogs, how
they are trained to use their sense of smell to support people with
potentially dangerous health conditions, and how they can be trained
to detect the odour of cancer. Roots illustrated this very well as
he became concerned about Neil's blood sugar levels and went and got
his testing kit so that Neil could check. In September Dr Jane
Sellwood gave us a detailed talk about flu, how easily it spreads and
how important it is for people to have a flu jab if it is offered.
For those of us who were thinking of refusing the flu jab it
certainly made us think again.
We enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea in
July at the Lands End pub and in August many of our members went on a
day out visiting the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson with a guided
tour, and Stansted Park, near Chichester. We also held a fundraising
event on the new “Centre Stage” at Woodley Precinct. Some of us
recently attended a music concert at the Oakwood Centre. Our house
groups continue to meet regularly and our rambling group recently
walked from Shinfield to Ryeish Green.
We are looking forward to several
additional events: a skittles evening with fish & chip supper, a
visit to Kew Gardens to see the Christmas lights, a Christmas meal,
and a theatre trip.
