Secretary's Report from AGM 2018-2019
What
does a trip to Chichester have in common with a theatre visit to Sunset
Boulevard? They are just two of the
events organised this year and both involved sunshine. Beryl Watts organised the day trip to
Chichester which included a short cruise with a cream tea, and was a huge
success, partly due to the heatwave which meant a calm boat trip. As for Sunset Boulevard how could you not
think of sunshine when the location is Malibu?
There
have been opportunities during the year to see popular shows and to go on trips.
Elizabeth Veasey and Elizabeth Baigent have both organised visits to see
popular shows in London and Wimbledon including, amongst others, 42nd
Street and Aladdin. There was a trip to Guildford In December for
the National Carol Service, which was preceded by shopping and lunch, and hardy
members went to Thursford in Norfolk
in December. This is always a popular
trip, the highlight being the show. These
events were all well supported by members.
Our regular monthly meetings have been varied,
with many interesting speakers, including our own member Gill Rutter who
demonstrated flower arranging at our coffee morning. In June our summer party was EqualiTeas a
celebration of suffrage. Members were
invited to dress as the 1920s and to make a hat. The winning hat fitted the period, complete
with TG colours. During the year our
gardeners contributed a variety of plants for our plant stall, bakers provided
cakes for our coffee morning, our thespians have continued to entertain us, and
there had obviously been a lot of knitting, sewing and crafting for our
handicraft stall.
Christmas lunch at The Chateau was enjoyed by
everyone and, as usual, had been well organised by Yvonne Smith. And
talking of food, our monthly lunch club continues to be very popular and well
supported.
We
continue to support good causes and in 2017 we raised £750 for the Air Ambulance, with the cheque being presented
in April last year. Members have also been generous in their
support of the Shoe Box Appeal, organised by St Paul’s, by donating appropriate
items as well as knitted items, particularly from the Knit and Natter group.
We have joined social media and now have a page
on Facebook and on TG’s own web-site as a means of promoting what we do.
The Guild supported both Federation and National
events throughout the year and members have received reports of these. We have received invitations from local guilds
to attend their birthday celebrations and members of our Guild have
participated in holidays organised by the Federation.
The National AGM was in Brighton with
Princess Anne in attendance and whilst some members travelled there to attend
the AGM others just had a day out in Brighton.
Finally, thanks to Harry Guglielmi and Brian
Miller for their help during the year to make sure everything in the hall is ready
for our meetings, and, on a personal level, I would like to thank everyone for
helping me settle in during my first year as secretary.
