May 2019

At most of our monthly meetings the Woodley Townswomen's Guild invites a speaker and a variety of interesting topics are covered. In April Mr Harrie Cooke's talk was entitled “A Very British Brew”. Mr Cooke told us about how his father had gone out to Assam, India, in the 1920s to manage a tea plantation and showed us photos from his father's collection. It was incredible to see pictures of the local people cutting down trees working barefoot with absolutely no safety protection. We also saw photos of working elephants moving huge tree trunks and wondered how they were trained, but apparently the baby elephants are trained by their parents! We heard a lot about life on the tea plantation and it was lovely to hear such a personal family story.

The May meeting was our birthday meeting and we heard all about “Tax, Care and Toy Boys”. Although we did not get any tips on how to find a toy boy, we did hear all about where our money could end up without proper careful planning. We were advised to consider trust wills, lasting power of attorney and funeral plans. Although this was a serious subject our speaker made it light-hearted enough to hold our interest and keep us amused. Appointments were offered for people to get further advice and some of our ladies did express an interest in this. After the talk we enjoyed birthday cake with our tea and coffee.
