Woodley
Townswomen's Guild had
a very interesting talk by Kalpana Majithia, on Sari Draping at our
birthday meeting in May. Indian saris were originally made of cotton, silk was later used due to the influence of Persian culture. A
sari is usually about 6 metres in length and an Indian lady might
typically own 50 – 60 saris. A beautiful selection of saris was on
display ranging from fairly simple lightweight ones, to very heavily
embellished ones for special occasions. A very decorative sari for a
wedding could take up to two years to make, as it would be sewn by
hand. With Kalpana's help some of our members got to try on a sari
and they looked very elegant. After the talk our Chairman, Doreen
Wheeler, cut the birthday cake and we enjoyed a slice of cake with
our tea. (Please see photos in gallery).
A group of members recently enjoyed a
bluebell walk at Rushall Farm near Bradfield. We have several other
activities planned throughout the summer including a theatre trip to
Oxford, an afternoon tea outing, and a trip to the Royal Armouries
and Stansted Park.
