July 2018

Woodley Townswomen's Guild continues to meet monthly. In May we had a very interesting talk on Charles Dickens' Troubled Childhood, in which our speaker explained how many of the characters in his books were inspired by people from his childhood and how the memory of his family's poverty inspired him to keep on writing so as never to be in that situation again. The speaker at our June meeting gave a talk on Georgian Cookery and we heard that savoury and sweet dishes were all mixed rather than a set meal as today and that table manners left a lot to be desired! Sue Simmonds from Soundabout charity came to our July meeting and explained how the charity uses music, rhythm and sound to make connection with severely disabled and autistic people. It was inspiring to hear what they had achieved.

Four of our members went to the TG National AGM in Brighton in June which was attended by HRH The Princess Royal, who is patron of the organisation. The meeting went very smoothly and our members thoroughly enjoyed the day.

A few of our members and some husbands visited the Chiltern Open Air Museum when they held a Suffragette Weekend recently. We watched the suffragettes march, listened to some suffragette songs and watched a display of Jiu Jitsu which was used to protect the leaders of the Women's Suffrage Movement.

Our sub-groups continue to meet regularly for lunches, walks, crafts and games, and we have several outings planned.
