July 2017
Woodley Townswomen's Guild has
had two interesting meetings recently. Our June talk by Mike Brook
was entitled “Top of the Greasy Pole” and we heard some
interesting tales about the corridors of power. Sue Milton's talk in
July was on “Swan Upping”. A very keen follower of the swan
uppers, she showed us photos of them in action and explained about
their history and what happens during swan upping week. The timing
of her talk could not have been better as the swan uppers were in
action last week and anyone interested could go down to the Thames
and try and see them passing through.
Some of our
members went to the Oxford Theatre recently to see a comedy called “Out of
Order” which was hilarious. Over the last few months our rambling
group has visited South Hill Park at Bracknell, Warburg Nature
Reserve near Henley, and Moor Copse Nature Reserve near Tadley, with
each walk finishing with lunch nearby. Our house groups have also
continued to meet through the summer.
We are looking
forward to a day trip to the Royal Armouries and Stansted Park in
Hampshire in August and are already beginning to make plans for our
Christmas celebrations.
