Event Highlights 2018-19
These are just a few of the highlights of some of the events/outings during our Guild year which runs from April 2018 to March 2019.
April
A wonderful way to start our year with a theatre outing to Sunset Boulevard. It may have been cold, wet and windy but inside the theatre we were in Malibu. The scenery was wonderful, the costumes dazzling, and all in all a magnificent production.
Every alternate year we elect a local charity to support and our charity for 2017, by an overwhelming majority, was the London Air Ambulance. The money was raised during the year and at our monthly meeting we invited someone from the London Air Ambulance so that we could present a cheque for £750. One of the doctors, John Chattergee, gave us a very interesting and informative talk about their work.
May
A theatre outing combined with lunch. The food was very good (always tastes better when someone else has cooked it and done the washing up), followed by a production of 42nd Street. The critics got it right: this was excellent and the costumes were wonderful.
June
We held a summer tea party, 'EqualiTeas, to celebrate suffrage. Sandwiches, tea/coffee, strawberries and cream were provided, with a musical accompaniment appropriate to the early 1900s. We had a hat competition and some members even came dressed for the period.
A day trip to Chichester and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day. It's a lovely place to wander around, and after lunch we had a boat ride. With the current heat wave there was no need to worry about a boat rocking with the swell, but concerns were more to do with heatstroke and sunburn and keeping well hydrated.
August
We have a coffee morning in August with members providing cakes. This year one of our talented members gave us a demonstration of flower arranging. She showed us how to create two stunning displays, and made it look so easy. If only it were!
October
A trip to Wimbledon Theatre to see what was billed as 'The Band'. Very confusing: was this Glen Miller, Acker Bilk or Sgt Pepper (depending on your age). No, it was the story of the group Take That. Once that was cleared up, tickets were bought and off we went for a very entertaining afternoon.
November/December
A busy time of year. Our festivities began in November with our birthday celebration, complete with cake, wine and soft drinks, and then our Christmas lunch in December. There was a special raffle and everyone brought along a gift for our lucky dip, so even if you didn't win one of the prizes in the raffle you still went home with a gift.
January
What goes with Christmas trees, turkey and mince pies? Answer: a pantomime. Oh no,it doesn't. Oh yes, it does, and a jolly time was had by all on our trip to see Aladdin. The pantomime dame was outrageous, the costumes were wonderful and the jokes as bad as you would expect. In short, everything you hope for in a pantomime. It was the perfect way to end our Christmas.
Our book group had a 'field trip' to Covent Garden and the Actors' Church (St. Paul's) to soak up the atmosphere following our reading of 'The Rivers of London' by Ben Aaranovitch. We resisted the lure of the shops and stalls but did make sure we had a good lunch in a local brasserie.
