Activity Groups Reports from AGM 2017-2018
Handicrafts
The
small group has continued to meet throughout the year on a Thursday afternoon
on a regular monthly basis. We have
concentrated on specific skills to produce items to sell on the Handicrafts
Stall, and we each selected different styles of fabric bags which in some cases
were reversible and suitable for holidays or small scale shopping sprees. They proved to be a success and enabled us to
make a healthy sum to contribute to our chosen charity. I thank other members of our Guild who added
further items for us to sell, but the number of craft items donated to the
cause was disappointing.
After a number of years running the group I have decided to call a
halt on trying to introduce a variety of arts and crafts activities as there
may well be more interest in specialised crafts such as quilting and applique
that some of our members find more challenging as well as to their particular
taste. Discussions have been ongoing for
a couple of months to decide when and where such sessions might be hosted, and
the idea has attracted interest from members who have a more creative interest
in sewing. I see no reason why other
groups should not be set up to cover paper crafts or crochet. We have a lot of very talented individuals
amongst us, and it just needs someone to offer to host a particular craft or
interest. It could prove very popular
and such sessions only usually happen once a month.
I am happy to be hostess to a Rummikub group and I will shortly be
finding out who else wants to become an addict of this fascinating game which
is excellent for exercising the brain cells.
Finally, I would like to thank Jean Dobbs for producing the birthday cards
which are always ready each month for handing out to members at the appropriate
time. She never fails to have them ready
in good time and her efforts are much appreciated by the recipients.
Literary
Group
I
have decided to cancel the group as this last year, unfortunately, we have not
been a full group due to holidays and illness.
We have been together for 12 years and have been a very happy gathering
with lots of laughter and cups of tea.
Reading has always been a passion of mine and to share the many authors
with others has been a delight. Thank
you ladies for your company but it is time to say goodbye to our
gatherings.
Drama
We are very fortunate to have 13 or 14
members in our drama group now, and the four who have joined us in the past
year are very enthusiastic. Sally
Thomas has been here with us for many years, and has given valuable advice and
help. When preparing for plays, we have
weekly rehearsals, whereas at other times we may have breaks of two or three
months, so it’s not all the time.
Lunch club
Nine
different local venues were arranged during 2017 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
meeting at 12 noon. Numbers attending
have varied from 15 to 28 members, enjoying different food and drink, and
exchanging friendship in a different setting.
To join us, write your name on the sheet each month and take the
details, plus my telephone number in case of your plans being altered. Any drinks to be paid for first from the bar
in cash so food can be calculated and settled more quickly at the end of the
meal – usually with a 10% tip added. I
welcome any recommendations of your favourite venue for us to try.
Knit
and Natter
Firstly, I must thank
Elizabeth Baigent for hosting the knitters when I was unable to do so. We have met regularly on the second Monday in
the month, only missing two meetings due to bad weather. We are a small group, usually 6-8
members. We continue to make scarves,
mittens, hats and toys for the Christmas show boxes, also articles for the
Guild handicraft stall. Thank you to
all members who have been keeping us supplied with wool.
As for the natter, that goes very well with
the click of knitting needles! It is
surprising how this keeps us up-to-date on local news and all sorts of hints
and tips on many topics. You may not be
able to join us on Monday mornings but if you are a knitter I am sure Pam would
be pleased to have articles for the shoe boxes, particularly long scarves. There’s plenty of time between now and
October. One item per member would really
help.
