Activity Groups Reports from AGM 2016-17
Handicrafts
The group has met on seven Thursday
afternoons during the last 12 months.
No outings to national handicraft shows had been included in the
programme, but several projects were introduced including the construction of
card cut-out baskets for Easter eggs at Easter time, and cottage garden scenes
using coloured card and fabrics, plus the creative use of buttons.
As Christmas approached the group was
encouraged to tackle a simple patchwork project, and I trust I might see the
end products of some of these tasks one day.
Attendance has been patchy for various reasons, therefore continuity has
been difficult to maintain.
The
annual craft stall as held at the August coffee morning – a clear change from
previous years – basically to estimate its popularity and fund-raising potential at a different
time in the Guild calendar, and to assist the sale of recycled Christmas cards. Some members made small toys which were
contributed to the Shoebox Appeal.
Jean
Dobbs and Joan Farmer work tirelessly to produce many items sold to swell the
income to Guild funds, as well as being responsible for the production of the
birthday cards which are handed out, or delivered to members during the course
of the year.
New members are always
welcome to come along to our meetings, and if you have a particular craft skill
you could share with us, it would be much appreciated. We are grateful for new ideas.
Literary Group
This is the 11th year of the
literary group, although a small group we have enjoyed reading many books and
new authors. The group has had many
discussions and many laughs, together with a much needed cup of tea and
biscuits. Reading seems to be out of
fashion with the young preferring to use Kindle and iPods. I have both, but prefer to use the old
fashioned way of turning a page and have encouraged my grandchildren to do the
same – so far.
We
hope to continue our readings and should any other member like to join us you
will be very welcome.
Drama
In our drama group we have ten loyal members,
and they enjoy different types of readings.
I think amusing ones are usually popular. We hope you enjoy all kinds as well. Our meetings are held in two busy sessions a
year, followed by two sessions of a break each year as well. We are always pleased to see newcomers.
Lunch club
Nine
different local venues were arranged during 2016 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,
meeting at 12 noon. Numbers attending
have varied from 15 to 28 members enjoying different food and drink, and
exchanging friendship in a different setting.
To join us, write your name on the sheet each month and take the
details, plus my telephone number in case of your plans being altered. Any drinks to be paid for first from the bar
in cash, so food can be calculated and settled more quickly at the end of the
meal, usually with a 10% tip added. I
welcome any recommendations of your favourite venue for us to try.
Knit and Natter
Our
regular host has been incapacitated, and we are grateful to Elizabeth for
taking over in the short term. As usual
the group knitted much for the shoe box charity and we had a laugh whilst so
doing.
Wool
is always welcome and we share what gets donated. We would love to have new
members, those who would like to learn and those who would like to improve
their skills. We are always willing to
help
